Baba Hari Dass

“Practice of asana is taught to engage and direct prana through the subtle body, with steady flow and increasing amount, to purify and strengthen the nadis. Prana is a bridge between the gross and subtle body. All movement in the gross body are caused by prana.”

B.K.S. Iyengar

“My Body Is My Temple And Asanas Are My Prayers”

Baba Hari Das

“The practice of asana is  not merely a type of exercise, although one can derive much physical benefit from doing them. In doing asanas the body should be slow and conscious, in harmony with a slow inhalation and exhalation… Combining the awareness of body movement with awareness of breath allows for a synthesis of body, breath, mind, which is the essence of all yoga.”

Heartfelt Presence, Subtle Awareness, Unification of Body-Mind-Spirit

Private Yoga Sessions in Carpinteria & Santa Barbara, CA

I bring heartfelt presence, clear instruction, and subtle yet profound feedback both verbally and through adjustments in my teaching. I have been joyfully sharing the gift of yoga  for over 15 years with students and look forward to many years to come. My teacher BKS Iyengar recently passed away at 96. I was studying with him in India when he was in his 80’S, so I anticipate a long and fruitful career in yoga!

My additional certification as a CMP and 11+ years experience as a professional body worker combines with my years of teaching to create a keen eye to individual needs and an ability to respond and bring yoga to each student where they are at today.

Liz Collins Yoga Teacher & Practitioner

I have been practicing and studying meditation since 1995, beginning with the traditions of Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh, and continuing through studies in the Shambhala meditation tradition of Tibetan master Chogyam Trungpa’s linege at Naropa University. My university studies in Sanskrit have also informed my mantra meditation practice and teaching as well as deepened my devotion to the beauty of the sacred Devanagari, or ‘Language of the Gods.” I have studied regularly with Nita Rubio in the Tantric Dance of Feminine Power, mantra meditation, and ritual for the past 8 years as well. I draw on a variety of technologies of sound, movement, and breath to create space for myself and my students to enter into a state of meditative awareness.

Certification and Training

I was certified to teach yoga in 1998 at the Center for Yoga of Seattle, home to one of only 39 authorized Iyengar yoga Teacher Trainings in the United States. I studied in Pune, India with Iyengar and his family in 1998 and maintained study for 10 years with masters in the Iyengar tradition. I am continuously informed in my practice and teaching by my foundation in Iyengar’s precision, alignment, and use of props and restorative poses for a full range of practice. Over the years I have studied with a variety of deeply devoted practitioners and talented master teachers, including many senior Iyengar teachers  like Ramanad PatelAadil Palkhivalah, and Sue and Mike Maharry. I have also studied with yogini Shiva Rea, bhakti yogi Saul David Raye, Sharon Gannon and David Life of Jivamukti yoga, and Mark Whitwell, among others.

Daily Practice and Presence

I am currently enrolled in a two year in depth study program in Berkeley with Scott Blossom in the Shadow Yoga tradition, a practice that has held my drishti (gaze) for 9 years now. I gratefully cultivate a daily personal practice of asana, pranayama, mantra, yantra, and  meditation. I continue to study with master teachers (both internal and external) to help unlock personal potential, spiritual and physical health, wellness, and vitality for myself, and for those with whom I share the bountiful practices of yoga and meditation. I am a lifelong student and continue to bring fresh new insight into my teaching and practice through my studies and daily practice. I hope to see you soon in class or for a private or small group session.

Namaste,

Liz Collins
